PEARLWOOD AWARDS
The 1st ever Pearlwood Awards 2020 took place on 18th December 2020 at 4:00pm at National Theatre. The awards were organized by Great Lakes Institute of Strategic Studies (GLISS) with the main sponsors being MTN Uganda and YOTV Channels. The event was also the official launch of FOR HER 2021 film theme to advocate for the rights and interests of Women and the Girl-Child through Film.

PEARLWOOD AWARDS 2020 AND LAUNCH OF FOR HER 2021 PEARLWOOD AWARDS EDITION

Great Lakes Institute for Strategic Studies (GLISS), YOTV Channels, MTN Uganda in collaboration with the Pearlwood are pleased to announce the Pearlwood Awards 2020 and the launch of the FOR HER 2021 Pearlwood Awards Edition. The Awards and the launch are scheduled to take place on December 18, 2020 at 1600hrs at the National Theatre in Kampala.
Pearlwood Awards is a collaboration between the Pearlwood Association of Uganda, the Great Lakes Institute for Strategic Studies (GLISS), YOTV Channels and MTN Uganda to promote Uganda’s movie industry. The collaborating institutions are driven by a shared commitment to mobilize and provide Ugandan movie artists with the resources and platforms needed to develop film products that are Ugandan in character and competitive in the global film industry.
“Through this collaboration, we will harness GLISS’s intellectual ingenuity and convening power, YOTV Channels’s digital prowess and MTN Uganda’s dominance of the telecommunications market to build Pearlwood Awards into a globally recognizable brand with a Ugandan character,” says Godber Tumushabe, Associate Director at the Great Lakes Institute for Strategic Studies.
Marvis Musungu, MTN Uganda’s Digital GTM specialist said MTN is honored to be associated with the local film industry and to contribute towards its growth. “At MTN Uganda, we know the potential of this industry to create jobs and become the number one selling point for the country. We have seen this with Nollywood of Nigeria and Bollywood of India. It is our intention to work with all parties to grow this industry to realize its full potential. At MTN we believe that when we work together, we can achieve a lot more,” she said.
At the same function, the partners will launch the FOR HER 2021 as the theme for the 2021 Edition of Pearlwood Awards. FOR HER 2021 is dedicated to content that features and celebrates Ugandan women and the Ugandan girl child. The Pearlwood Awards 2021 Edition will be held in December 2021.
According to Mzee Bwanika, Speaker of Pearlwood (the umbrella organization), “The partnership between the Association and the three collaborating institutions promises a new future for Uganda’s film industry”
